G is for Giethoorn

Wow, if you want a simple life why not try Giethoorn, Netherlands where there are no roads at all and everyone gets around town using foot bridges and boats.

Apparently little has changed here since the 1800’s with most homes having thatched roofs.  It’s too bad it gets so cold here because it’s beautiful.  There are over four miles of canals and all the bridges are wood.  I imagine that’s a maintenance issue.

This is the Venice of the Netherlands and there are guided canal tours for tourists.  The village was founded by fugitives in AD 1230 but became known after it was featured in the film Fanfare by Dutch filmmaker, Bert Haanstra, in 1958.

Most of the villagers get around by boat because there are no cars allowed in the village.

Interesting, huh?

  1. That is interesting! Pretty too! My sister and her family lived in the Netherlands for 2 years a few years back for her husband's work. She said a lot of people in the part they were at used bicycles to get around and public transportation. She did enjoy the time there, though it was a bit of a strain being away from family, kids having to be in new schools, etc.

    1. Betty,

That would definitely be a change of pace to move someplace entirely different for two years. I think it would be better after one was retired and the kids were grown. Then you wouldn't have to worry about kids and schools, etc. On the other hand, it would be educational for the kids at the same time.

Thanks for reading my A to Z and leaving a comment.

  2. This is very interesting! Just think, no expense with a vehicle. I can't imagine it. HA!
I wonder if it would be comforting to hear the water all around you. Hmmm...

    1. Thea,

Yeah, no vehicle maintenance would be great, wouldn't it? As long as you were able to shop for supplies, etc. without it.

I bet the water gently lapping along the canals would be nice.

Thanks for reading my A to Z and leaving a comment.

  4. Oh wow. Stunning. There are some areas around here that look a bit like that, on water, but there are roads where cars can go. I like those areas, but I think I'd like this town better.

  5. I can't imagine not having a car to get around and having to get around by boat! It's a charming little community, isn't it? Wonder what its population is?

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Glad to meet you!

    1. Michele,

Thanks for visiting me. I can't imagine not having a car either, but I guess you'd get used to it if you lived there. The population of this place didn't come up in my research.

You can tell I'm a cat person, huh? They can be entertaining.

  6. I saw photos of this place a while back and it's just so neat! I wouldn't be able to do the cold either. And, well, I'd probably end up in the canals lol

When I ran across this I thought it would make a good G for the A to Z challenge. It would be interesting to visit but in the summertime for sure.
