Getting rid of the CAPTCHA on Blogger Blogs

Free Clipart

I was going to post about Groundhog Day, or Candlemas, or whatever you acknowledge this time of the year when we find out about how much longer winter will stick around. I can already tell the days are getting longer here and we have gotten in the 50’s the last few days with sunshine, so things are looking up here. The birds are also very happy splashing about in the birdbath “pool,” having a gay old time.

Instead of posting about looking forward to the warming days, I have decided to post instructions for getting rid of the CAPTCHA on your blogger blogs.

These instructions will work on your Blogger account only. This is not for Word Press blogs.

I have been asked about this several times lately, so I thought I may as well address it here in a blog post, especially since we have Lee’s A to Z challenge coming up and some of you may want to get rid of the CAPTCHA on your Blogger blogs before then.

Here is a link to info on the A to Z challenge, if you want to sign up for that. There are several subjects concerning the challenge addressed here.

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge: Adding Badges and Banners to Your Blog

Now, to get rid of the CAPTCHA

1. Go to your blogger blog and sign in.

2. At the top right corner, you will see "design." Click that.

3. This should take you to a page where you will see a small version of your blog. Wait for it to load. On the left, there is a menu. Scroll down to "settings" and click that. It is at the bottom of the list.

4. There will be another sub-list offering more selections you can choose. Click on "posts and comments." This is the second thing on this sub-list.

5. After the page opens, you will see a section for Posts and another for Comments. Scroll down under "comments" and you will see "show word verification." This is the fourth item down on the list.

6. You will see a down arrow there next to the little box. If you click on this arrow, there are two options – "yes" or "no." Select the "no" option.

7. Once you have done this, go to the top right corner. A large orange box says "save setting." Click this box. This is very IMPORTANT.

You will be finished and can then look at your blog, write a post, or just log out. You will not be able to see if the CAPTCHA is gone, but when people leave you a comment, it will be gone, making it easier for people to make comments on your blog. You can ask somebody to verify this, so you will know it is gone. I hope this helps some of you who are having trouble with this situation.

Please note that if you have more than one Blogger blog, you will need to repeat the process on each one.

  1. Hi there!
What an excellent entry to all blogger users, so many people have their CAPTCHA on without even realising it and, unless you are some sort of super blog, I dont think there is any justification for causing all of your commenters so much inconvenience!

I really cannot read the things, especially the ones on blogger. They just look like ink blot tests to me! I started using cool software called RUMOLA which reads and fills in all the CAPTCHA for me automatically which does make blogging a lot easier as so many people do still have the blasted things on!

Your cat Tootie looks JUST like my cat Hamish by the way! I will have to try and post a pic at some point!

Ps. I'm guessing you also hate CAPTCHA because of this post so you can try the software at skipinput.com if you are interested :)

  2. Alicia,

Thanks for your comments. That software sounds interesting. I didn't know anything about that. People ask me quite a bit how to disable the captcha, so I thought I'd just write a post on it. Most people don't even realize it is on when they set up their blogs.

You should post a pic of your cat with maybe a cute short story.

    Thanks for visiting.

  6. Lee,

I think it was important to write up a post like this, especially in light of the challenge you have coming up. I can jump through the hoops also, but I would rather not have to. May as well make it as easy as you can for people who visit.

No, I have not compiled a life soundtrack. Don't even know how to go about it, but that sounds interesting.

That RUMOLA tip was good, too. I hate CAPTCHA, but you probably don't notice since I'm so slick about it.

THX for all the good advice, y'all.

Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm glad this post was useful to you. Yes, the CAPTCHA can be quite annoying. It is not just you. They can discourage people from posting because of the hoops you have to jump through first.

Thanks for reading and commenting. I have no trouble with spammers. After I removed the CAPTCHA, I also changed the settings so annonymous posters can't post. Things have worked out fine for me.

More people post without that CAPTCHA because they don't have the time to figure out what it says. I am one of them. After three tries, I'm done.

  16. Super THANKS for this step by step procedure on how to get rid of the CAPTCHA on Blogger Blogs, Sunni! I already implemented the fix on my new Blog that I just opened up.

Hopefully later in the day my fellow MyOpera member refugee friends will confirm that the CAPTCHA is no longer being an obstacle for them. For a while there I was worrying that I might have to consider WordPress instead for my new Blogging home after MyOpera shuts down early next year.

  17. Sunni, I can now confirm that my MyOpera friends confirmed that the CAPTCHA no longer appeared for them. So that's great.

Since I see that you're a Blogger veteran, having been on Blogger as long as I have been on MyOpera ... maybe you can answer this question and / or provide a solution to this ginormous conundrum I now encounter on Blogger.

Okay, over on the MyOpera Community, we were of course used to being able to QUOTE text in the comments. As far as I've seen and as far as I've Googled ... you cannot quote text in Blogger comments? Would that be correct?

Or if you CAN quote text in Blogger comments, how in the world DO you do it? An inquiring mind wants to know.

I have Googled and have found Tutorials, Tips & Widgets for this, that and the other ... but, nothing regarding something that will give me the ability to quote text in Blogger comments. Any insight, Sunni?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. suntana,

Thanks for your question. I'll see if I can answer it. You can quote text in Blogger but I haven't tried this yet. In the post box where you type up your blog post there are quote marks in the upper right in the menu bar above the box. You can use those to quote text. The correct way to do it involves using html which I'm not familiar with so I won't even attempt to explain that to you. I would just use the quote marks to set the text off and I would probably just highlight it and use a different font color. Try that and see if it works. I'll experiment with it when I have more time and may do a blog post on it later.

I'm tied up right now participating in NaNo and trying to get organized to move.

I'm glad the CAPTCHA instructions worked for you.

      Sunni

    2. Yeah, I had seen the Quote Marks in the Post composing area Toolbar. But, I was wondering about in the Comments area.

By now I have deduced that probably Blogger's version of having a Quote function is ... having the Threaded Comments function whereby one can reply specifically to each individual comment in its own mini Sub-Thread within the main thread.

Well, that works as long as we have an RSS Feed in place giving us Heads Ups on ALL the replies. Otherwise we wouldn't know replies were popping up in Sub-Threads in some long Main Thread.

Ehhh, not exactly a global crisis level issue. LOL We'll eventually get accustomed to not having a quote function in the Comments.

      Delete
  18. Another thing with which we were spoiled over on the MyOpera Community was the EDIT function in the comments. Now my MyOpera friends & I were freaking out because suddenly we didn't have the Edit function to go back and fix our Boo Boos after we've submitted a comment.

One of my friends was half laughing saying that now her eyes were gonna pop out from having to super double and triple proofread her comments on my Blogger Blog before clicking on that Publish button.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. suntana,

Yes there is an EDIT function. You can use it any time to edit a post you want to change, but when you're leaving a comment you can't go back and change that once you post it, so you need to PREVIEW your comment first (hit preview below the comment box) and if you see a type-o you can edit it by hitting edit in the top right of the comment box. Once you're satisfied with your comment, click on publish below the comment box. I hope this helps.

I've never heard of the MyOpera Community.

      Sunni

      Delete
  19. Oh yeah, I was aware of the Edit function in Posts in BlogSpot and I've definitely used it by now, Sunni. But, I along with my soon to be Ex-MyOpera members are freaking out because of the lack of an Edit function in the COMMENTS ... in BlogSpot as well as in WordPress.

BlogSpot and WordPress seem to be about the only Online Communities / Forums that don't have an Edit function in the Comments. Cuz like I go to the avast Forums, Geeks to Go Forums and other Forums and they all have an Edit function in the Comments. Oh well, we'll just have to get used to paying more attention to what we're typing because once that Publish Button is clicked on ... the comments are OUT THERE as is. Yikes! Well, sometimes when it's really a big mess up, we WILL delete the comment and redo it. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  20. Another big thanks for the tip regarding the Edit function in the Preview area of the Comments, Sunni. I'll pass it on to my visitors. I know that one of my friends has already been kiddingly hounding me at least 3 times regarding an Edit function.

I'll try it again in just a bit. You see ... I tried it a while ago. I clicked on Preview and suddenly things locked up. Doh! The "Comment as: suntana511" disappeared from below the typing area of the New Comment Box and now neither the Publish Button nor the Preview Button would do anything.

I wound up having to Sign Out of my Blog and sign back in again. That got things working again. But, yeah, I MUST try your tip again.

    Thanks again, Sunni!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ahhh, Okay, I finally got into the Preview area successfully. I think the lockup that I thought I got before was not really a lockup, but rather the Preview area would have appeared once your Blog finished loading. It's that I'm on Dial Up Internet, so a lot of things take longer for me.

  22. As to you never having heard of the MyOpera Community, Sunni? Oh, it wasn't on the same popularity level as facebook, Twitter, tumblr and whatever other Biggies there are out there.

The MyOpera Community is associated with the Opera Browser. And so well, Opera Browser doesn't have a big market share in the Browser arena either. So it's not surprising that the MyOpera Community isn't that well-known.

But, we really liked the MyOpera Community a lot because of all the perks, like the Blogs being super duper customizable. I did my best to recreate my Blog Design from over there ... here at BlogSpot. I like the results, but I couldn't customize every nook and cranny that I could over there.

Things will get much better as I learn the Ins & Outs of BlogSpot. For example, I got very good with CSS Code over there, but I seem to be back to square one here. The CSS Code that I see here at BlogSpot seems foreign to me right now. LOL I'll have to figure it out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for visiting my site but I have no extra money to invest in anything you're selling. I hope the info here helped you with your CAPTCHA problems.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I did follow the instructions for removing captcha however, it is appearing on my posting page. I cannot make a post without it popping up! Dos the fix only apply to comments?
Do you know how to rid the captcha from the posting page? It says I posted more than 50 posts in one day and that is why it is now embedded. All I did was import my backup file to the blog and of course there were more than 50 posts. I wish I could get rid of captcha in blogger postiing area. It even will not allow an emailing of a post - it refuses the email.

    Thanks for any help...

    1. Hi Ron,

I'm sorry you have such troubles and it sounds really annoying, I'm no computer expert, but I thnk it has to do with importing your backup file to your blog. If you had a CAPTCHA on it (backup file) it probably got imported to your blog with the file. I would say to contact Blogger and explain the situation.

In the meantime, if I figure out another solution, I'll let you know here. I've never heard of the CAPTCHA popping up when you write a post. It may just be a simple setting fix. I would go to the CAPTCHA setting again and see if there is anything there to reset. Otherwise, contact Blogger as mentioned above.

I'm sorry that's all I know at this time.
