When I’m sixty-four

This is going to date me I know.  I’ve had this song running through my head for about a week now because my birthday’s almost here.  It sure seems that not so very long ago, this song came out and I thought, “Wow, it’ll be a long time until that’s me.”  The Beatles recorded this song in 1966.  I never thought I’d ever write a blog post about it.  There were no computers back then.

So what can I say when I think of this song?  Yes, being out until quarter of four (in the morning) is quite like me.  I’m a night owl and don’t expect that to change much.  Yes, I’ve been locked out of the house as well when it wasn’t nearly this late, and I was only across the street visiting the neighbor.

I don’t know about mending a fuse, but I would try knowing how I push myself to conquer things I don’t know.  I’m not the type to knit a sweater or anything else.  I have no grand children to bounce on my knee either and I feel I’m getting too old to pull weeds, although I do it occasionally.  I’m more likely to be down on my knees cleaning house.  That’s a weekly occurrence around here.  My knees always say ouch, but I don’t listen.

There are no Valentines or bottles of wine for me unless I buy them myself.  Needing me and feeding me is debatable sometimes.  I do usually get a birthday card though.  That’s enough I guess.

What can I say?  The years are flying by.  I’m glad I stay in reasonably good shape.  Most of the time, it’s only the calendar that tells the true story.  Let’s hope it stays that way.  I have a lot more to do before I kick the bucket, I hope.

  1. I'm turning 44 this year and I can't stay up much past 10pm. We had night owl friends in town and they kept us up until after midnight 2 days in a row--it took me all day Sunday to recover! Of course, they're my age and they're night owls. I think the older we get, the less likely we are to be night owls if we have jobs requiring us to get up early year after year. For those who work night hours, that clock never resets. Some who get up early struggle with it and become night owls when they retire!

  2. Stephanie,

What you say is probably true of most people, if you have to rise early for work, however, I have a sister who works two jobs and gets by on about 2-4 hours of sleep a night. We're both night owls and not that far apart in age. I think it'll always be that way with us. If I ever have to take a part time job, it willl for sure be nights because I'm not a morning person and never have been. It was extremely tough for me getting to a job by eight AM for twenty-plus years.

It would be nice to be forty-four again. Enjoy it while you can.

  3. "Sergeant Pepper" might be my favorite album of all time. I've listened to it hundreds (maybe even thousands) of times and know all the words, even to "Within You Without You," the song before "When I'm Sixty-Four."

I always think this is a guy begging his wife not to throw him out because he's old. Never mind that it's a happy tune with a clarinet and everything.

  4. John,

You're probably right about the song. I have all the Beatles albums too and know all the songs by heart. This song just seemed to be in my head with this BD approaching that, of course years ago, I never thought much about actually getting there.

    Thanks for visiting and posting,
