The Desert isn’t all Sand and Sagebrush

Blooming Paloverde Tree

But don’t get me wrong.  There’s plenty of that to go around.  Sometimes I wonder if the house will ever be clean and free of sand.  I think the answer to that is probably no.  I know one thing; I don’t want to spend all my free time cleaning, especially when it looks like a waste of time after two days has gone by.  When I get home from work all I want to do is sit down and put my feet up a while before I tackle dinner.

I’m glad that a big salad is acceptable around here for dinner most of the time.  The last thing I usually want to do is cook something after serving food all day.  I’m ready to relax with my glass of wine.

 Tootie in my reading chair

Right now, I have my windows open and am enjoying the nice breeze blowing in (bringing more dust with it, I’m sure), but I just don’t care.  It feels so good and it’s unseasonably cool for May in the desert, so I’ll take it.  I know we have 115 degrees coming down the road.

 Raven napping downstairs

Two mockingbirds are serenading me as I write this.  I love to hear their happy chirps.  I wish they’d stand still long enough to get a picture, but they are flitting from tree to tree.

Koki napping on top of my computer

The cats are all napping so they can stay awake all night and get into trouble in the house.  Tootie roams the halls all night and meows loud enough to wake us up.  Koki and Raven get into things.

For today I thought I’d post some flower pictures taken from my patio and around my yard.  Enjoy.

This wouldn't be complete without an oleander.  They thrive in the desert

Happy Birthday to my sister, Tedo, who will be old enough tomorrow to take social security, if she wants to.  It’s hard to believe we’re all getting so old when it really wasn’t that long ago that all of us were growing up on the cotton farm.

My beautiful sister Tedo (Tedri).  The family wouldn't know what to do without her.

  1. Happy birthday to your sister! It is amazing that we are getting older, isn't it? Hubby's SIL is collecting Social Security benefits and his brother signed up for Medicare this year. My brother turns 60 this year; I'll be the only one still in the 50s for a couple more years. Time flies, doesn't it?

Beautiful pictures here. This will be our first summer in the extreme heat. I'm trying to prepare myself for it (mentally) and wonder how those who work outside make it through (I guess because you have to).

    1. Betty,

Yes, we do what we have to do and somehow manage it. The workers here are out working at 115 degrees. They cover up with long sleeved shirts and big hats. It can't be all that comfy but they manage and stay heat protected.

Yes, I still have some siblings in their 50's but gradually all of us are reaching the next decade of life. We always laugh and wonder how we reached this age. When your young you never think about such things.

I imagine you will think the first summer is mighty hot, but we all get used to it. You learn to do things outdoors very early or very late before sunset.

Thanks for reading and leaving a comment.

    1. pilch,

That's one thing about our genes I can't argue about. None of us look as old as we are and we're grateful for that. I'm sure someday the years will catch up like they always do.

I really like to have the color around in the summer and flowers to water. It puts a smile on my face. And I'll never argue about my pretty kitties. I love them to death and they know it.

Thanks for reading and your comment.

  3. Happy birthday to your sister. Wouldn't it be nice if there was some way to get rid of all the dust and sand without having to clean?
