Wow! Food service has really changed

The fast food soda machines look like this

I don’t go out to eat very much so it surprised me to find all this new equipment in restaurants today.  I’m talking about fast food as well as sit-down restaurants.  We only get fast food a couple of times a year.  Hubby won two meals at Wendy’s from the radio station so we went there about a month ago.  It took us a minute to figure out how to use the soda machine.  We’re used to the old fashioned ones with a slot for each beverage.  This one was all press buttons.  Once I selected a beverage a whole new screen popped up with more selections.  We finally got our drinks.  This sure is high tech for fast food.

All you do is sign with your finger after putting in the tip  Very space age, huh?

A couple of weeks after that, we met some friends at Olive Garden for an early dinner.  I was surprised to find a pay center right at the table.  It even spits out a receipt for you.  When were those installed?  Now there’s no need to wait for a waitress to take care of the bill.  I can see this would be good because it frees up the staff and they also don’t have to leave with your credit card.  Everything is becoming so high-tech.  I’m not sure I like it.

  1. Oh yeah, it took me several minutes to figure out where the water was on one of those soda machines. It's not hard once you get the hang of it, but getting the hang of it... And those thingies at the tables... Great. I like when you can order using them, too.

  2. What they are doing (sadly) by the various machines, especially on tables at restaurants to pay bills or order food, is reduce the wait staff. I see the day where you order at the table by a machine, servers bring your food, you pay and you are gone. Less staff needed I think. They are training us to use more technology and less people. Think of it with self check out at stores, etc. Good way to eliminate the labor force.

    1. Betty,

I think you're right about this. One day there will likely be few people around in service jobs. The consumer will probably do it all using machines. I hope the young people entering the work force are aware of this and are training in other areas and not for jobs that will be obsolete.
