Jump Rope and Hula-Hoops

I sat down to write this remembering how we played hours with these things as kids, especially on summer vacation from school.  I wonder if kids even know what these things are today.  I never see my neighbor kids doing any of this stuff.  It seems bicycles are the thing here and the boys carry around BB guns in the desert to shoot my wildlife, which makes me mad.  They always hear about it too, but that’s another story.

At recess in school, we gathered a group of girls and played with very long jump ropes.  We had a person at each end and we’d take turns jumping in and out and doing routines while singing verses, sometimes with two or three people jumping rope at the same time.  It was great fun.  We also carried this out at home, but didn’t have a rope near that long to play with.  However, with seven of us there were more than enough kids.

We’d do routines at home too or would jump rope by ourselves, but usually several of us participated in everything we did.  We had hula-hoops too which were very cheap in those days, or we wouldn’t have had them.  We would work our way up until we could hula with five or six of them on at one time.  I do see these hoops in the store occasionally and it makes me think of those wonderful childhood days filled with chatter and laughter.  I’ve even been tempted to buy one to see if I can still do it.  The mind never grows old as fast as the body.

How about you, did you jump rope or play with hula-hoops as a kid?

  1. Remember tying the other end of the rope to something when you only had two playing at one time? That can also pertain to the Chine Jump Rope. Remember putting each end under the legs of a chair? Ahhhh...the memories!

    1. Thea,

Yeah, those were the old days. I wonder if kids even play jump rope today. That's probably too boring.

  2. Jumping rope was a BIG deal when I was a kid. We had the annual Jump Rope for Heart events that everyone loved to join in on and jump rope was a big part of what I remember doing during elementary school physical education classes. With all that jumping, you'd think I'd be more coordinated at it than I am. Elle @ Erratic Project Junkie

    1. Elle,

We must lose some of that coordination as we get older because we sure were agile as kids.

  3. We did the jump rope thing, although I never quite mastered the group jump rope activity. It was SO hard to coordinate it so everyone jumped at exactly the same time.

  4. Steph,

It's hard to coordinate when several people are in the jump rope routine at once, but we had no trouble as kids once we got the hang of it.

    1. Betty,

Both of these were great exercises. We used to put on five hula hoops at times to see if we could keep all of them going.

  6. My youngest son (who is almost 40) is a fitness nut and he jumps rope regularly. So the grandkids have been exposed and we often jump rope at my house. I am better with a hula hoop than they are. Must be all the experience I got when I was younger LOL

  8. Set your mind at ease. Kids in Ontario use hula hoops in gym class and my grandkids have each got one here. As for jump rope, kids and adults participate in Jump Rope for Heart, a fundraiser for Heart and Stroke each spring. They may not use the long ones like we did at recess, but the others are alive and well.

    1. Susanne,

I've never heard of hula hoops in gym class. That's a good thing and the fundraiser is great too.

  9. I did both but enjoyed the jump rope more. Jump ropes are part of the equipment in the gym where I workout.

    1. Mary,

I didn't know they had jump ropes in gym these days. The last one I belonged to here didn't have them.

      Thanks for reading.
