Old age is a bitch

And this includes the animal kingdom.

 Tootie

Two days ago we were combing out our oldest cat, Tootie, and I discovered one of her fang teeth was missing.  I was shocked.  She always hollers like we’re killing her, but a sixteen-year-old cat needs help with grooming, especially one with long hair.

When we were through with the grooming, we got the flashlight and looked in her mouth better to make sure the tooth didn’t just break off.  We put our fingers on her gums and couldn’t feel any remnants, so I think her whole tooth is gone.  We don’t know when that happened, or where the tooth is.  Perhaps, she swallowed it.  But we’re monitoring her to make sure we don’t need to take her back to the vet.  She isn’t bothered by the missing tooth at all.

I’ve had a lot of cats in my life but this is the first one I’ve had that had her teeth start to fall out with old age.  Poor girl.  I know anything that people go through animals can get also, so it makes me think about getting old and all my aches and pains.  One thing cats have over us though (and probably dogs too) is that they never complain and whine about their problems.

Maybe we humans could learn a thing or two from them.  After all, it does no good to complain, does it?  That won’t make the situation any different.  Instead, I think we should all embrace the fact we’re still alive and try to enjoy it to the best of our abilities.  What do you think?

  1. I have to agree with you; we should embrace that fact that we are living and not moan and groan about our aches and pains, etc. It is sometimes heartbreaking out and about looking at an older dog walking, knowing that it is slower than its youth, but still making the effort to be out there getting some exercise with their owner.

That's so true. Animals are amazing.

  2. How would she lose a tooth? Weird. But that's true. Complaining doesn't change anything. It only annoys those around us.

    1. Liz,

I totally agree about complaining. I have no idea how that tooth fell out and when it happened. I've had cats all my life but this is a first for me.

      Thanks for reading.

  3. My lovely old cat who lived to the age of 18 lost a fang tooth too. We found it and it hadn't broken off. It looked like it had just fallen out. He was fine and didn't seem to miss it at all.

    1. PL,

We never did find Tootie's tooth, but she isn't bothered by it, so that's a good thing.

      Thanks for reading.

  4. I have a cat who's lost all her "fang teeth," and it hasn't affected her ability to eat. She's an old girl whose hair is matted and she won't let us near her to de-mat her. We just give her attention and thank God for her.

    1. John,

A cat losing its teeth has never happened to me before. But she can still eat so that's good. Tootie hates to be combed out too, but we have to tackle her once in a while. Otherwise, she's a bit of a rag-muffin.

      Thanks for reading.
