V is for Vinegar

As we all know vinegar has been around for years and is used for lots of things.  It also comes in many flavors today and isn’t just plain white vinegar anymore.

They say it cleans windows better than any window cleaner, but I can’t stand the smell of vinegar.  Honestly, I would never use it if I could avoid it.  The odor makes me very ill.  But I use it in salad dressing and things like that and we use it at work all the time to soak pots that get burned on the bottom while doing a demo.  Vinegar is so strong it wafts all over the store.  I do everything I can to avoid burning anything so I don’t have to get near this stuff.

I have a personal story concerning vinegar that I don’t know if I should share or not.  It all started with having to wear socks and closed in shoes at work, preferably some type of sneaker with a good non-slip sole.  Let me tell you this, my feet aren’t designed to wear closed in shoes and sneakers all the time.  I’m working far too many days than I signed up for because we’re always shorthanded at work.  I much prefer wearing sandals or going barefoot, which I always do when I’m off work.  I do understand the need for all this footwear in a professional environment where food is served, but I still hate it and my feet hate it more.

This issue has caused me a lot of grief due to the fact I contracted the worst case of athlete’s foot I’ve ever had in my life.  I couldn’t seem to shake it so I decided to confront my friend, Google, and see what I could come up with.  I ended up on a chat board where this health issue was being discussed.  There were two options, soaking my feet in Clorox or white vinegar.  Well somehow the Clorox seemed a bit harsh, so I decided on the vinegar.

Every night, for two weeks, I soaked my feet in this white vinegar and warm water bath.  I figured if this would do the trick I could put up with the smell of vinegar that long.  It stung like the devil for about the first ten minutes, but I kept at it soaking at least twenty minute a night.  Then I would dry my feet well, put on my athlete’s foot cream and socks and go to bed.  I was supposed to do this twice a day, but with my schedule I was doing good to do it every night.

It got less painful as time went on and in two weeks I thought I was a bit better, so I put on a pair of flip-flops and went out on a Saturday to clean up the patio.  This turned out to be a big mistake.  My toes were so irritated from the vinegar that I got the worst blister on my big toe.  I also had three other smaller blisters on other toes.  The athlete’s foot was better, but not gone, and now I had these wicked-looking blisters to deal with.  I finally had to break down and go to the doctor on my next day off.

Of course he told me the vinegar helped to kill my athlete’s foot fungus, but it also damaged my healthy skin and that’s why I got the blisters.  He told me to stop the home remedies and gave me two cream prescriptions, plus an anti-fungal pill.  I was also instructed to soak my feett in Epsom salts for the next two weeks, preferably twice a day.

I finally got the prescriptions two days later and I did soak my feet once a day for two weeks.  He told me I had to wear socks until the situation was healed up.  So I do wear sock at home, but no shoes.  It’s still the usual socks and shoes at work daily.  It’s been almost a month now and I’m still dealing with this issue, although it’s ninety percent better than when it started.  I’m hoping to have it completely cleared up in the next two weeks.  Fingers crossed.

The whole purpose of this post is to caution you about using vinegar on your body.  Perhaps I had the solution mixed up too strong, but I wouldn’t want to go through all this again.  I think the vinegar would kill the athlete’s foot, as well as the Clorox that a friend at work swears by.  But, a little bit goes a long way.

I finally had to break down and do it

I’m talking about going to the doctor, which I hate to do.  I always try home remedies first and usually only see the doctor once a year.  I keep a positive attitude and am always optimistic about things, even when times look bleak.  Usually I can fix whatever it is myself, but sometimes it takes the advice of a sister or friend.  This usually always works.

In mid-December I had to go to the doctor when I came home from work with a fever and still had it the next day.  I had a bad cold and a sinus infection.  I think I probably wrote about that in a previous post.  The situation now is a bad case of athlete’s foot I can’t get rid of.  I’ve been trying home remedies for the last few weeks.  I attribute this to having to wear socks and sneakers daily at work.  My feet do not like socks and closed-in shoes.  I like going barefoot and wearing my flip-flops.  The first thing to come off after work is the shoes and then all the other clothes I have to put on for the job.  Anyway, this foot problem is an ongoing thing and I expect it to be as long as I have to work and wear this “uniform.”

After burning my feet with a vinegar bath twice a day, I had to call that quits after three days.  I was intending to kill the athlete’s foot fungus.  Well it seemed to get a bit better, but it also burned the rest of my feet.  Being the determined person I am, I put up with soaking for thirty minutes each time.  After the third day, even my strong will power figured I was doing more harm than good so I went back to my green alcohol and medicated Gold Bond powder.

Just inserting a few pics here to break up the text.  Believe me you don't want to see my feet.

Then I decided to unwrap my poor patio plants and water them and let them get some air.  That led to cleaning up the whole patio and getting rid of leaves and dirt and all the stuff that drifted in over the winter.  Naturally, I was wearing flip-flops to do this entire job, which took a few hours.  That finished my feet off, not to mention my poor aching back.

Since then I’ve had the worst blister on my big toe.  And of course the athlete’s foot is still there too, but not as bad as it was.  It was finally time to go and see the doctor again.  Good grief!  Twice in three months.  I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.

To make a long story short, I have two new prescriptions to pick up at the pharmacy tomorrow.  Tonight I start my Epsom salt bath for my feet that I have to do twice a day.  “Stop all the home remedies” the doctor said, but the Gold Bond powder is okay and I can continue to use my ointment for the athlete’s foot until I get my prescription.

This stuff better get rid of these foot problems because I can’t wear my flip-flops until that blister is gone.  I’m crossing my fingers here.

On a cheerier note, I got my car fixed and it looks great. The weather has been fantastic.  I love the 80’s and having the windows open.  And the cats continue to amuse me every day with their antics.

I’m still attending the citizens’ police academy and learning so much.  The chief of police came to talk to us tonight and Saturday we get to go to the shooting range and watch a demonstration by the SWAT team.  I can’t wait for that.  More later.

Thank you, sister

Sisters discuss all sorts of things in life no matter how everyday or how personal they are.  That’s the nice things about having a sister to talk to.  I’m lucky enough to have four sisters.  Usually we always learn things from each other and are willing to help each other out with issues.

So discussion turns from family to work and everything in between.  The other week I was chatting with one of my sisters on FB and we got into the subject of feet.  Both of us stand a lot of hours at work so aching feet is a problem we can both relate to.  I find wearing closed in shoes is not for me, but it’s a requirement at work for almost any job.  In fact I have to wear way too many clothes in the summer, so I got in the habit of bringing a tank top to work I can change into for the ride home.  I keep flip-flops in the car.  The only time this thinking doesn’t apply is winter when I’m freezing.

This is my possible athlete's foot cure

Anyway back to my subject of feet.  I get athlete’s foot if I wear closed in shoes so that’s always an issue to deal with.  My hubby laughs when he sees all my issues (dry eyes, athlete’s foot, etc) that I have to attend to everyday.  I’m sure he’s glad he doesn’t have any of this trouble.

This is worth a try if you ever have this issue

I had been using Tenactin on my feet and also putting Gold Bond medicated foot powder on my feet and in my shoes.  I discovered my big bottle of Tenactin was outdated so was going to buy a new one.  My sister told me to go to Walmart and get some green alcohol (I never noticed they made that color) and to use that on my feet along with the Gold Bond powder.  Her homeopathic doctor told her about this.  She and I would both rather go the homeopathic route when we can.

I’d been washing my feet with antibacterial soap anyway so I poured the alcohol on after and let them air dry and then powdered my toes.  I started her remedy that same evening and I was amazed how well it works.  She told me I’d be amazed and she was right.  It didn’t even take two weeks to get rid of it.  So I’m sold on this now and will keep it on hand at all times.  If anyone needs help with foot issues, try this out.  It really does work.

Now maybe I’ll stop being Dr Sunni and post something else next time.
