A close call

The hummingbirds have been pestering me to put the feeder up for about a week or two now.  I finally got out and did it.  I had put it in the garage over the winter.  It was full of dead bees that I had to clean out.  It’s been rainy and chilly so I guess this job wasn’t at the top of my list

I really love this bird feeder because it holds a lot but it has a poor design as it takes a while to get it back together when I take it apart to clean and fill it, another reason for my procrastinating.

Baby Hummer

Then hubby was out sprinkling some grass seed in the bare patches on the lawn when this little guy hit the window.  At this point, I still had the feeder inside.  I felt terrible.  However, I don’t know if this had any bearing on whether this poor little thing would have hit the window or not, as birds hit the big windows all year long.  The hummers had been scolding me through the kitchen window, so maybe I was feeling a little bit guilty about not wanting to tackle this feeder.

Things aren't looking good for this poor little hummingbird

Trying to get it's act together

We grabbed the camera and took multiple photos of his/her recovery.  It was touch and go for a while.  When this little bird finally took flight it landed about a foot away from my husband who reached down and petted it gently.

 Recovering slowly

It finally made it to this twine we have holding a tree up and then eventually to a tree.  We were happy it would be all right and live to see another day.

 "I can fly again."

The next day it was on the feeder along with the first orioles of the season.  It didn’t take them long to find it.  The orioles can drain it in under a week with several of them working on it along with the hummingbirds.  Assembling this feeder never gets any easier either.  But I’d rather face that than have winter here again.

A male Oriole has found the feeder too.  Can they smell the sugar in there?

I got flowers planted too about two weeks ago, so things are looking a lot like spring and summer at my house.  Now we just need the weather to cooperate.

  1. I'm glad he pulled through! We had so many humming birds in Texas and I really miss the little guys. I never saw one on my feeder here in NY last year but I am going to try again this year.

    1. Carol,

I don't know if hummers go that far north, but may as well try. I hope they do.

      Thanks for reading.

  2. So glad the bird made it! We had a few that didn't when we were up in Prescott and they would hit the windows. The doves were really bad about that with hitting the windows and at times I would have the perfect outline of a dove shape on the window. I did a lot of window washing there :)

It does look like a nice feeder, but you are right, it looks a bit intricate to put it together.

    1. Betty,

Too many birds hit the windows here. I just hate it when they don't survive. I always hope they'll all make it. We always have bird shapes on the windows and I know all about window washing. LOL

Yes, that feeder is horrible to get together, but I'm glad it's so big and holds so much nectar. The orioles would drain the small one I had in a day or two.

      Thanks for reading.

    1. Vashti,

We always do what we can to help any bird survive. Some of them are scared of us, but others know we're trying to help them.

The hummers are so cute. We had one here with a bright purple throat. He was gorgeous but I didn't have my camera at the time.

Thanks for reading and your nice comment.

    1. Thea,

We took so many because we were so focused on this little bird hoping he would make it. I wanted to post a few of his recovery. I try to have my camera with me all the time.

Thanks for reading and leaving a comment.

  5. That's awful when they hit the window. Perhaps it'll know for next time.

    1. Liz,

I hope they learn if they survive to tell their friends, but I think the reflection in the glass looks like more trees to the birds.

      Thanks for reading.
